When we opened the curtains this morning, all you could see was light grey fog with darker grey shapes that vaguely resembled trees and the car. Fog. “Wow,” said Emily, “this is the foggiest day of my life.” Amazing that she is already categorising her life. Is she keeping track of this metadata?

The plan
I was reminded today of something said to me just before my c-section, which was two days ahead of the plan. I won’t trouble you with what happened to me today, suffice it to say it was all about the plan, and the change(s) in the plan. And who was driving the change(s). Let meContinue reading “The plan”
Random red lights
We are stuck in traffic. Sam is sittings next to me in the passenger seat. Sam, who is so sweet and gets endless playdate requests, sighs. “Oh my god…ness,” she says, quickly correcting herself to avoid swearing. “What are these random red lights? Toot your horn, mummy!” She leans right across, reaching for the hornContinue reading “Random red lights”
Testing, Testing, 1 2 3
The school held a zoominar (zoom) today about testing in year 2. Phonics, Key Stage 2. The focus was how the school will do everything it can to support the children, ensuring a safe space to sit the tests so they are not intimidated, and a low key approach to reduce stress and worry. ItContinue reading “Testing, Testing, 1 2 3”
On holiday
We’re on holiday. A staycation. Thanks to global warming the weather is amazing and we can visit the beach. The beach is the best bit and the worst bit. I hadn’t realised just how much the beach keeps young kids – mine at least – entertained, providing fantastic holiday snaps (best bit). And the sandContinue reading “On holiday”
literally aka
And so it goes on. Everything is literally this and aka that. In fact, the two words have developed some kind of mutual meaning exchange. Literally gross, aka – gross. Oh my god, literally, aka – Oh my god. (Yes, I am asking them not to say this.) I literally said yes, aka – yes.Continue reading “literally aka”
Mum, you’re so embarrassing
Emily is in a drama class. For the end of term they invite the parents in to watch a show, which they have been preparing all term. ‘I’m not sure I want you to come,’ she said to me in the car. ‘Really?’ I responded without really thinking about it. ‘You’ve probably got some stageContinue reading “Mum, you’re so embarrassing”
Health and Safety
Every time one of the girls has to visit the ‘medical’ at school (I think the ‘medical’ is just a room set aside for a bit of first aid and a lovely member of staff called Gloria, who may or may not be a nurse though I presume and hope has some kind of firstContinue reading “Health and Safety”
Street talk
Emily was on the swings at the playground this afternoon. Too close for a mum’s comfort, but in reality doing no harm, was a group of young teenagers. One of the boys was, I am guessing, head of mischief innovation. Tangling the three swings up, climbing the frame, high jumping out of a swing, runningContinue reading “Street talk”
Bribery and Bitter Lemons
I gave all three children a cookie today. Nothing very unusual about that. Except that it was 7.55am. It was a bribe. I was bribing them out of the house to go to school. When that only partially worked, I gave them another cookie each. Before I knew it, I had three girls, in uniform,Continue reading “Bribery and Bitter Lemons”
